A letter from Share Our Strength founder, Bill Shore

On Saturday morning, while Nate was on the living room floor playing with his Legos and I was at our nearby kitchen counter answering some e-mails, Rosemary said to me: “Do we still have yesterday’s newspaper? I’ve been meaning to tell you. You’ve got to see the picture of all of the people carrying boxes from a truck. You’ve got to get it.”

When Roe says “you’ve got to” do something, she doesn’t mean it the way some people mean you’ve got to see a movie or try a new restaurant when you get the chance. She means it’s got to be the thing you do before you draw your very next breath. She means it the way a policeman means “step away from the car.” It is not a mere suggestion. If it’s a lazy weekend as this one was, and she’s in a really relaxed mood, she’ll wait maybe 60 seconds or so before asking again, “Did you get yesterday’s paper yet and see that picture?” There is really only one solution of course and that is to do exactly what she is insisting.

For the next 30 minutes we looked for the previous day’s papers, even searched on-line, but to no avail. Then Roe thought to check the recycling bin in the lobby of our building. It was a good idea because we found the Boston Globe we were looking for, which saved us from getting dressed and searching the recycling bins in the lobbies of other buildings in Boston and quite possibly its suburbs.

The picture, taken by Associated Press photographer Skip Peterson, took up about a sixth of the Boston Globe’s second page. There are at least a dozen people in the picture, all men in heavy parkas walking away from several semi-tractor trailers, their faces partially obscured by the hoods they are wearing in bitter cold weather and the large cardboard boxes they have piled in their arms. The dark interior of an open truck looms behind them. A few of the men look straight ahead, but one in the foreground, perhaps the one most aware of the photographer, looks down at the ground.

The boxes in their arms carry the logo of Feed the Children; the Oklahoma based anti-hunger organization known mostly from infomercials showing its work with the most destitute children in developing countries around the world. This photograph is from Wilmington, Ohio, the town of 12,000 about 60 miles southwest of Columbus that has recently lost 8,000 jobs due to the closing of cargo shipper DHL.

“Isn’t that the kind of picture we always see somewhere else in the world?” asked Rosemary. “That’s why I wanted you to see it. I couldn’t believe it was here in America. You’ve got to send that picture to people.”

Like most good photographs this one speaks for itself, its image more powerful than any commentary that might accompany it. I can describe the scene but must leave it to you to try to imagine what it feels like to be carrying a box of donated food to your family for the first time rather than the paycheck you’ve carried home for years.

Every era has iconic images that help to define it. In the aftermath of Obama’s election it seemed that ours might be the large swell of diverse crowds that turned out to meet the new president. But there is a risk that the photos we remember from this time will of the large swell of diverse crowds waiting for emergency assistance, and that they will evoke the photos of Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange that we thought were uniquely relegated to another time in American history.

I’m glad I listened to Rosemary in searching for that picture (as if I had any choice!). It’s often hard to know just what to do with the scenes to which we bear witness. Rosemary couldn’t rest until she’d passed this one on. Neither could I.

Billy

p.s. I couldn’t find on-line the photo that was in the Globe, but I’ve attached a few others… to read more about Share Our Strength’s efforts to fight hunger please visit www.strength.org.

Join "Operation No Kid Hungry"

Operation No Kid Hungry Text Campaign

Share Our Strength and AT&T, along with the Communications Workers of America and the AT&T Pioneers, are supporting two new initiatives in the fight against childhood hunger -- a text-donation program and a nationwide AT&T employee food drive.

Text Donation Program

From now until March 1, wireless phone users, including AT&T customers, can donate $5 to Share Our Strength by simply texting the word "SHARE" to 20222 on their mobile device*. AT&T will match text donations for a total contribution up to $100,000.

Donations from the text program will help provide food for the 12.4 million children at risk of hunger in America and will help address the recent increase in demand for food aid across the nation.

AT&T Employees On Board for the Cause

In conjunction with the text donation program, AT&T Pioneers - the industry's largest employee and retiree volunteer organization - are leading a nationwide, AT&T employee food drive to benefit community food banks that serve America's children in 32 major metropolitan areas.

Both campaigns respond to President-elect Obama's call to action for all Americans to participate in the national day of service on Jan. 19 and build on his commitment to end childhood hunger by 2015.

A one-time charge of $5 will be added to your mobile phone bill. Standard messaging rates and additional fees may apply. All charges are billed by and payable to your mobile service provider. Your tax deductible donation benefits the Share our Strength campaign. Service is available on most carriers. You can unsubscribe at anytime by texting 'STOP' to 20222 or text 'HELP' for more info.
